Frequently Asked Questions

How many treatments does it take?

The laser works by disabling hair in the active growth stage (anagen) at the time of treatment. Since not all hairs are in this stage during your appointment, additional sessions will be necessary to disable all the hair follicles in the area being treated. Sessions are usually booked at least 2-4 weeks apart depending on the body's location. Most patients will require a minimum of at least three treatments and generally up to six sessions. Expect anywhere from 15 to 30 % hair loss per session. Finer hair and dark skin clients may require 6-8 treatments. If you suffer from a hormone imbalance, your treatments may be ongoing. To attain effective results, it is imperative treatments be sequenced in order to completely remove the hair shaft. Every client's expectations of hair loss are different. Some may be happy with 40-50% hair loss while others may wish to continue until they reach their maximum of 70-95%.

Will tanning affect my treatment progress?

Tanning before a treatment is not recommended. Lasers work best on light pigmented skin since it allows more penetration of the laser light into the area being treated. Lasering may be performed on tanned skin but the energy of the laser must be reduced to accommodate the sensitivity of a tan. Therefore, the client may require more treatments than someone without a tan. To have a more effective and aggressive treatment, its best to stay out of the sun until after your appointment date.

Does the treatment hurt?

No treatment to remove unwanted hair is completely painless. Palomar uses the patented Cool Roller to aid in comforting the patient by freezing the area being treated. Past clients have indicated the sensation generated by the laser feels like a rubber band being snapped against their skin. Patients who have previously waxed or had electrolysis usually find the treatments much more tolerable and obviously permanent. There are other options to make the treatments more comfortable. Headache medication taken responsibly will aid in the preparation of treatment. Anbesol, used primarily for toothaches can also assist those having upper lip treatments.

What is the advantage of using a laser for hair removal?

Lasers are precise instruments that can be adjusted to the exact parameters that will specifically disable the hair follicle. The EsteLux laser uses a wide beam enabling it to treat many hairs at once. Due to this larger head, bigger areas like a man's full back, women's full legs or arms can be completely hair free within a few hours. You will see immediate results that will last far longer than shaving, tweezing, waxing, chemical depilation, or other temporary methods.

Is it safe?

Laser hair removal was pioneered after more than 30 years of laser research by physicians at the Massachusetts General Hospital's Wellman Laboratories, and has been shown through extensive clinical trials at more than 10 laser U.S. and Canadian laser research centers to provide safe and effective hair removal. The laser parameters were carefully defined by studying the anatomy of the hair follicle and precisely matching the laser light and pulse duration to the follicle size, depth, and location to safely and effectively remove the hair.
